About
Every mirror, print, card and woodblock made in my sunny South London studio reflects my passion for colour, drawing and textured materials. Joyful, fresh and contemporary, with a Mid-Century Scandinavian feel, my images emerge from sketchbooks and are hand, or digitally, printed. Silkscreen printing is my first love - lifting a screen to reveal a glorious hit of rich colour is heaven. Colours, and their effect on each other, fascinate me. Put simply my colours must sing – which is harder to achieve than it sounds – and is why my studio creaks under the weight of endless colour tests and samples. I thoroughly enjoy everything about making my work, and each aspect receives the same loving attention to detail, from packaging a card to designing a large commission.
INSPIRATIONS
Milton Avery, William Scott and Georges Braques, Folk Art from North America and Mexican papercuts and tinwork are just some of my influences.
I adore fifties textile and poster designs for their sophisticated, yet deceptively effortless, beauty.
The quintessentially British aesthetic of artists including Eric Ravilious, Eric Gill Edward Bawden also inspire me enormously for their delicate timeless quality, and is why I chose Starch Green to create my fabulous new logo.
Pebbles, seeds, leaves, fragments of nature collected or drawn are recurring themes in my artwork.
SHARED INTERESTS
Whilst treasuring days spent in my studio I also enjoy being part of a team and am fortunate to work with great people on a wide range of creative projects. I regularly collaborate with Georgina Wright, a weave designer for Kvadrat, Denmark. We designed the 75th Anniversary ‘Sense Collection’ of embroidered leather for Elmo Leather, Sweden, premiered at Stockholm Furniture Fair, which included numerous wonderful trips to Sweden. As I love Scandinavian design this was an amazing opportunity to gain first hand experience of the Design industry in Sweden, and made me truly appreciate the respect paid to design in everyday life. I have also been part of an inspiring creative team at Helen Yardley rugs for many years, mainly producing tufted rug prototypes and samples, a great environment to share my love of colour, design and..... cake. Helen Yardley has a first class reputation for making beautiful contemporary rugs in glorious colours, and I’m proud to have been involved in a wide range of projects originating from the studio. I also taught Art Foundation - Printmaking and Visual Studies for five years at Southwark College, in Elephant and Castle which was wonderfully rewarding.
